CINCINNATI -- Vanessa Gilles' second-straight Olympic start was certainly one for the books. The four-year Cincinnati star toed the line on Canada's fifth and final shootout attempt, drilling one to the left side of the net that served as the deciding goal in a win over Brazil to reach the semifinals.
"Honestly, you play your own luck, and we've practiced for this eventuality for about a month now, so I had no doubt that we were going to make it through," Gilles told Nick Murray of CBC Sports. "For me, hard work gets you to your dreams. And that's been the case for me right now. I never dreamed I would be here. I just kept working and working and. working for my own self and to one day maybe be here. This is a surreal moment for me, obviously."
Canada will now face the United States at 4 a.m. ET on Monday. The winner remains in contention for gold, while the loser can still claim bronze.
