Bearcats Fall To Dayton in First Match of 2021 Fall Season

DAYTON – The University of Cincinnati volleyball team saw its Friday afternoon comeback at Dayton fall just short after forcing a deciding fifth set, but eventually falling to the Flyers, three sets to two.

DAYTON – The University of Cincinnati volleyball team saw its Friday afternoon comeback at Dayton fall just short after forcing a deciding fifth set, but eventually falling to the Flyers, three sets to two.
 
Cincinnati (0-1) finished the first game of the day with 56 kills on 162 attempts, a total of 60 digs and 4 blocks.
 
NOTES
  • Sarah Norcom tied her career high with 13 kills in the match, with a .222 hitting percentage.
  • Adria Oliver finished the game with 13 kills on 22 attempts, for a .545 hitting percentage.
  • Maria Mallon had her first double-double of the season with 12 kills and 11 digs.
  • Armania Heckenmueller had 44 assists her first match of the 2021 season. 
  • In her first appearance as a Bearcat, Abby Walker finished with 11 kills on 27 attempts.
  • Four Bearcats reached double digits in points.
 
SET BREAK DOWN 
SET 1: Dayton 25, UC 23
Dayton started the match on a 2-0 run before Cincinnati went back and forth with the Flyers with a bunch of errors thrown in. Molly Harrison earned the first official point for the Bearcats with a kill to put the score at 6-10. The Bearcats eventually caught up to the Flyers, tying it 14-14 after a 3-0 run by UC. Dayton went on a 3-0 run of their own before the Bearcats went on a 4-0 run to take the lead, 20-19. However the Flyers would take six out of the last nine points to win the set 25-23.
 
SET 2: Dayton 25, UC 23
Dayton started set two on a 5-1 run before the Bearcats started to claw their way back into the match. The Bearcats had a 3-0 run to make the game 7-8, and shortly after the Bearcats went on another 3-0 run to tie it at 11. Dayton eventually took the lead 20-13 until Sarah Norcom came in with fire power and scored seven of the Bearcats' next eight points to tie the game at 21. Unfortunately Dayton pulled away late to take set 2, 25-23.
 
SET 3: UC 25, Dayton 22
Bearcats started set 3 with on a 4-0 run, with Mallon earning two of those points. The Bearcats and the Flyers traded points back and forth throughout the match. When the score was 16-12, Cincinnati earned eight of the next 12 points. Bearcats were up 24-16 with set point on the line when Dayton went on a 6-0 run to bring the score within two. Abby Walker was able to close out the set and get the win for the Bearcats, 25-22.
 
SET 4: UC 26, 24
It was a 4-0 Dayton lead to start the match. It was back and forth as the Bearcats chipped away at their lead, eventually going on a 3-0 run. Armania Heckenmueller served an ace to give the Bearcats a 10-9 lead. After Mallon gave UC the lead 12-11, Dayton went on a 4-0 run. UC was down 15-19 but eventually went on a 3-0 run to bring the score within 1, 21-22. With their backs up against the wall, down 23-24, the Bearcats ripped off three straight points for the comeback win. There were six total ties during set 4. 
 
SET 5: Dayton 15, UC 7
Dayton got on the board first, securing the first point of the set. UC and Dayton battled back and forth for the first few points before Dayton went on a 7-0 run. The Bearcats attempted to close the gap, but couldn't do it as Dayton won the set 15-7.

The Bearcats take on Texas State in a Friday night matchup in Dayton. The game is at 7 p.m. in UD Arena.
