CINCINNATI -- University of Cincinnati defender Karli Royer has earned AAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for her recent performances.
Royer, a graduate student studying behavioral analysis, continued her fantastic start to the season in games against Xavier and Virginia Tech this weekend, two teams receiving Top-25 votes. Her free-kick goal in the 44th minute against the Hokies proved to be the game-winner, and it was her first goal since 2017, one that netted her TopDrawSoccer.com National Team of the Week honors. The Westerville, Ohio, native has played all 380 minutes this year as well.
The Bearcats held Virginia Tech, which was coming off a 7-1 win over Elon and had outscored its three opponents 11-1, to only a PK score. UC notched its first ACC win since 2017 against Miami, and two of the squad's four goals allowed are PKs.
Royer's honor follows Vanessa DiNardo, who was named to the league's Honor Roll last Monday. Royer also made the AAC All-Tourney team this spring.
UC remains at home for two matches this weekend, first against Ball State on Thursday (7 p.m.), followed by Eastern Illinois Sunday (6 p.m.). Fans are also invited to attend Friday's 3-for-3 event at Gettler Stadium, a 6:30 p.m. memorial walk for Ally Sidloski that benefits the #WePlayFor3 fund.
