CINCINNATI -- University of Cincinnati senior Maria Mallon has earned AAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for her weekend performance in the Notre Dame Tournament.
Mallon, an outside hitter, recorded 32 digs and one block in the win versus Bowling Green and totaled 70 digs on the weekend, averaging 5.38 digs per set. The 32 digs against Bowling Green are a new personal best, breaking her career-high of 25 digs that she set the previous night against Notre Dame. She also recorded three more double-doubles on the weekend, making it five double-doubles of the season in only six games.
Offensively, Mallon also shined on the court with 55 total kills, averaging 4.23 kills per set. She now has 915 career kills, putting her 85 kills away from 1,000. She also recorded one service ace on the weekend. Mallon has played in all 25 sets and started all six games for the Bearcats.
She earned Notre Dame All-Tournament Team honors for her total performance on the weekend.
The Bearcats (3-3) lost the first game of the weekend Friday night to Milwaukee, but came back and battled against top-25 ranked Notre Dame to win the game 3-1. The team came back Sunday afternoon to defeat Bowling Green 3-2.
UC has a bye week and returns to the court for their home season opener Thursday, September 16th at 6:30 p.m. ET when they host local rivals Xavier in Fifth Third Arena. All games are free admission thanks to Experience UC.
