LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Kansas' early attacks eventually found the scoring column in the 25th minute, turning into a 3-0 halftime lead and 4-1 victory over the Cincinnati soccer team on Thursday night.
The Bearcats saw their three-game win streak end as well, falling to 4-2-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Once the Jayhawks reached the scoring column, they would find more success 10 and 13 minutes later with two more goals. The middle one came by virtue of a double-post hit and rebound shot by Shira Elinav.
Cincinnati, limited offensively the first period (Kansas had allowed just two goals in its first six contests), started the second half with extra push and aggression. Karli Royer nearly took it the distance, zipping around defenders from the opposite side of the field, before feeding a long cross to Lauren Bastian. Her shot was saved, but Maddy Pittman immediately punched it in for her first-career goal in the 52nd minute.
KU responded with another goal just 68 seconds later to stifle the rally.
QUOTES FROM NEIL STAFFORD
"We had a rough night on several levels. First, I have to take responsibility for the approach we took for the game. Looking back I think I would have done things a bit differently tactically. We showed Kansas too much respect and we didn't impose our will on the game and I believe that hurt us a lot tonight. But regardless of formations or how we line up, we have to have the correct mentality when competing. We didn't have that tonight and they were able to take the game to us. Every single game we have to compete in key categories like the first and second ball, set pieces, our pass completion percentage was dire, we didn't get the ball on frame in crucial moments. At this level, it's punish or get punished.
"I was proud of the second-half performance as we imposed ourselves much more in the game, outshooting them 10-2 and having some decent goal scoring chances showed what this group is capable of on the road. This is a great learning opportunity for all of us, now we have to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and get ready for Michigan."
