MURRAY, Ky. -- The University of Cincinnati soccer team did not let an 86th-minute Murray State goal sway its determination, as Alli Pestaina headed in the golden goal in the 108th minute off Karli Royer's free kick for a 2-1 win Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bearcats' first struck on Camryn Hartman's 34th-minute goal. Brandi Thomsen's corner kick was headed three times at the line, first by Chloe Spitler and then Grace Wolber before Hartman's snuck past the goalkeeper's stretch.
The Racers retaliated near the end of regulation, going step-for-step with the Bearcats on a one-on-one before sneaking one inside the left post.
The winner came on yet another flawless set-piece, as Karli Royer's free kick sailed inside the six-yard box, where Pestaina tipped it in with the straight-away header.
NOTABLE
-It was both Hartman's and Pestaina's first goals of the season. Each had one last year.
-Pestaina's score was the team's first golden goal since Kendall Battle on March 24 against Houston. The only other one of the Neil Stafford tenure came in 2019.
-UC is 5-2-1 when leading at the half and 8-8-1 the last three seasons on the road.
-Anna Rexford collected six saves while the Bearcats held a 13-5 advantage in corner kicks.
