FITCHBURG, Wisc. -- Joe McCarthy recorded his second-career ace to help lead the team to a 10-stroke improvement in the second round of the Badger Invitational, climbing to fourth in the 14-team field.

McCarthy's moment came on the 207-yard No. 8 hole, and he also added four birdies. His other hole-in-one came in March at the Spartan Collegiate at Sea Island. Clay Amlung and Mason Lenhart also added eagles, while Sam Jean notched a whopping eight birdies. For good measure, Lenhart also had an ace at the Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational in September 2019.

"Today was one of the strangest rounds I have ever coached," head coach Doug Martin said. "We started very fast, 6-under through three holes, and really struggled from 4-10, the hardest stretch of the course, but stayed patient and and played the last six to 8-under and finish the day at 6-under. This team continues to show the patience, discipline and toughness I expect. The last two days have challenged us in all three."

Jean's 67 marked a career-low after he matched his previous with a 68 in the season-opening tournament. He has climbed into a tie for fourth as well, with Amlung right behind in the No. 10 spot. Both earned top-10 finishes their last time out as well.

The Bearcats' 10-stroke improvement was the second-best behind Illinois State, whose 13-stroke boost launched it into first place.

"Tomorrow is a great chance for us to build off the momentum of today's finish. Congrats to Joey on his hole-in-one," Martin said.
