BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Fifty-four thrilling holes later, the Cincinnati men's golf team opened its season by sharing the Hoosier Collegiate Invite title with preseason No. 10 Illinois.
The Bearcats earned their first tournament title since March 30, 2021 at the Craft Farms Intercollegiate in Gulf Shores, Ala. Prior to that, UC last claimed a crown in October 2016 at the Firestone Invitational.
UC was 3-over for the day, with Illinois two strokes better. Sam Jean matched a career-low with a 3-under 68 to close it out.\
"We have a real special group and they bought in," head coach Doug Martin said. "The whole finish was just symbolic of what college golf is ... one of their guys made a long birdie that put them one up, then Clay (Amlung) was our last guy who was going to count, and he made a 30-footer on the last hole to tie it. Theirs made one as well to tie it. The performance by not only our guys, but Illinois too, is what makes college golf so great.
"As long as we focus on what we can do, the sky is the limit. We have to have someone step up every day. Today, Sam stepped up and shot a 68."
Gingerich, as Martin mentioned the previous night, led after the first 36 holes with a 4-under 138 that included a career-low 67 in the second round.
Next up for the squad is the Badger Invitational in Fitchburg, Wisconsin, from Sept. 26-28.
