TicketsCINCINNATI -- University of Cincinnati icon Oscar Robertson has built a transcendent legacy, and it was further confirmed this week with his naming to the NBA's 75th-anniversary team.
Robertson (1958-60), a member of the College, FIBA and Naismith Basketball Hall of Fames, scored 2,973 points in just 88 games as a Bearcat (freshmen were not yet eligible) for a 33.8 points-per-game average that ranks third in NCAA history. He also holds the UC record for career rebounds (1,338 and 15.2 per game) and is sixth in assists (425 and 4.8), despite the stat not arriving till his junior season, and earned National Player of the Year honors all three years.
He is also the namesake of the Oscar Robertson Award, presented annually by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association to its National Player of the Year. His No. 12 jersey was retired by UC at the conclusion of his career, and his likeness is immortalized on a statue in Varsity Village next to Fifth Third Arena's eastside entrance.
As a pro, Robertson averaged 25.7 points, 7.5 rebounds and 9.5 assists over 14 seasons with the Cincinnati Royals and Milwaukee Bucks. He was a 12-time All-Star and 11-time All-NBA selection in addition to Rookie of the Year (1961), MVP (1964) and NBA champion (1971). He also led the league in assists six times and earned three All-Star MVP accolades.
