CINCINNATI – Senior quarterback Desmond Ridder was named to the Maxwell Award semifinalist list on Monday. He is one of just 12 semifinalists nationwide for the award that is presented annually to college football's top player.
Through eight games in 2021, Ridder has passed for 1,847 yards and 18 touchdowns, while adding 171 yards and three scores on the ground. He is also the active career leader in wins and winning % among NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision signal callers, winning over 88% of his games (39-5).
Ridder, the 2020 American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year, 2021 AAC Championship Game Most Outstanding Player and 2018 AAC Rookie of the Year, led the Bearcats to an AAC Championship and the team's first New Year's Six appearance since 2009 last season.
Ridder is the No. 2 passer in school history, throwing for 8,752 yards and 75 touchdowns. He needs four TD passes to move ahead of UC QB coach Gino Guidugli (78 from 2001-04) for first in UC history in TD throws.
The senior was just recently named to the 2021 Davey O'Brien QB Class, making him eligible to win the award. He is also on the Watch Lists for the Manning, Unitas and Walter Camp awards this season.
He was a 2020 finalist for the Manning Award and a semifinalist for the Maxwell and O'Brien Awards.
Ridder is among a handful of Bearcats that are in consideration for prestigious awards this year, including Darrian Beavers (Butkus), Ahmad Gardner and Coby Bryant (both Jim Thorpe).
