CINCINNATI, OH --The Cincinnati volleyball team took down the Wichita State Shockers 3-2 (25-20, 21-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-6) Friday at home at Fifth Third Arena.
The win moved the Bearcats' record to 16-9 overall and 11-6 in AAC action.
The Bearcats were led by a double-double from Maria Mallon, who registered 18 kills and 15 digs on the day. Abby Walker also added 13 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Payton Frederick chipped in for UC with 16 digs to go with six blocks from Walker.
Game Notes
» Cincinnati had four players in double figures in kills and digs.
» Maria Mallon registered a double-double with 18 kills and 15 digs. She also chipped in with a game-high three aces.
» Cincinnati got a match-high 16 digs from Payton Frederick, which is the most since she dug up 18 against SMU on 10/29/21.
» Cincinnati attackers were helped by a team-high 45 assists from Emme Madden. She also had a season-high four kills.
» This was Cincinnati's first win at home against the Shockers since 2018.
» Adria Oliver had a .833 hitting percentage on 12 attempts, her best of the season.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Bearcats opened up an early one set to none lead, winning the first set 25-20. Cincinnati never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 13-12 in a set that showcased three lead changes before the Bearcats took over the lead.
SET 2 | Cincinnati then dropped the second set 25-21, evening things at a set each. Wichita State went on a run late to grab the lead, which they held for the remainder of the set.
SET 3 | Cincinnati fell again in set three, 23-25, to make it a 2-1 deficit. Despite three late points by UC to bring the set within one point, Wichita State barely held them off.
SET 4 | Cincinnati broke their two set losing streak and forced a fifth set with a 25-21 victory in set number four. The Bearcats took the lead at 12-11 in a set that featured 11 ties and five lead changes.
SET 5 | Cincinnati fought back from down 2-1 to take two straight sets, culminating in a 15-6 fifth-set victory, and secure the 3-2 win. Cincinnati ended on a high note, opening its biggest lead of the stanza, nine points, to finish off the set, totaling 10 kills along the way. They controlled this set the entire way, dominating from start to finish to complete the comeback victory.
