CINCINNATI -- The University of Cincinnati men's basketball team rode season-high scoring performances from David DeJulius (24 points) and Jeremiah Davenport (22 points) en route to a 71-57 win over Ashland on Saturday afternoon.
It was the first ever-meeting between the two schools after Texas Southern canceled their trip due to COVID-19 before lunchtime Friday. Following Cincinnati's scheduled noon practice, the coaching staff went to work on finding as many replacement options as possible before connecting with Ashland before 5 p.m. The Eagles defeated Valparaiso in an Oct. 30 exhibition as well.
UC (9-3) started out on a 6-0 run in the first half with threes from Davenport and John Newman III. The Bearcats started slow offensively, hitting only two ouf of their first nine shots as Davenport and Newman connected from deep, but started to find their groove as they grew into a physical game and shot 50 percent the rest of the way.
John Newman III had a nice lay-in off the glass and a turnaround jumper off a hustle loose-ball play from Hayden Koval and a Davenport three that pushed UC's lead to 16-12.
Mike Saunders Jr. collected a speedy lay-up and timely three that pushed UC's lead to five, in a first half which saw five lead changes. DeJulius hit a floater and a three-pointer off his own miss and Saunders had a lay-up and a three-pointer as part of a 15-2 run. Davenport three-pointer pushed UC's advantage to 13, the biggest of the half and a 34-21 halftime lead.
DeJulius had 10 of Bearcats' first 12 points out of the break as the lead swelled to 18. A 9-0 run from two Davenport three-pointers and a DeJulius triple got the score to 58-33.
