CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati women's basketball battled Ole Miss but ended up falling to the Rebels 75-63 on Sunday in Fifth Third Arena.
The Bearcats shot 65.7% from the free throw line, going 12-for-14. Junior point guard Akira Levy led the team with 21 points, which is a new season and career high. The Bearcats move to 4-4 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rebels got off to a quick 6-0 start in the first quarter. Freshman guard Braylyn Milton got things started for the Bearcats, scoring the first six points and going 4-4 from the free throw line. UC would go on a 12-2 run, highlighted by Milton's two three point shots to end the quarter with a new season and career high 12 points and the Bearcats leading 21-18.
Levy shined in the second quarter with back-to-back driving layups and fouls to score a quick six points. Ole Miss went on a 12-4 run to close out the half and take the lead, 36-31.
The Bearcats started the third quarter slow with Ole Miss jumping out to an eight point lead, 45-33. Freshman wing Emerita Mashaire added some spark to the offense with two three point shots and a new career and season high six points. The Bearcats would go on an 18-8 run in the last 5:20 of the third quarter, ending on an exciting three point jumper by Levy to bring the score back to within two, UC down 53-51.
The Bearcats couldn't hold on in the fourth quarter, recording nine turnovers and being outscored by the Rebels 22-12.
Ole Miss improves to 8-1 on the season.
