MEMPHIS, TENN. – The University of Cincinnati baseball team beat Memphis 10-6 in an American Athletic Conference series opener on Friday at FedExPark.
Cincinnati (15-16, 4-6 AAC) took a 2-1 lead in the second and didn't look back, getting a pitching gem from starter Garrett Schoenle (3-1) and home runs from Cole Harting and Griffin Merritt in the win.
UC got on the board with some timely two-out hitting in the second as Joe Powell belted an RBI single to left which scored Paul Komistek and Ryan Nicholson.
The Bearcats added three more in the fifth with a sac fly by Merritt, Jace Mercer scoring on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Komistek.
Harting hit his eighth round tripper of the season to left field in the sixth which scored Powell who had walked to lead off the frame. Harting scored two runs and walked twice.
Merritt went the opposite way in the seventh, clearing the fence in right to score Nicholson who led off the inning with a single. It was Merritt's fifth home run of the campaign. He finished 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs.
Schoenle held the Tigers at bay for six innings, giving up one run on four hits with seven strikeouts over four walks. His 116 pitchers were a season-high and he surrendered only one extra-base hit.

The Tigers and Bearcats continue their series, playing game two 45 minutes after the end of game one. Zach Segal will face off against Memphis hurler Jackson Cothren.
The teams continue their series with a 3 p.m. ET first pitch on Saturday and conclude the weekend with a 2 p.m. game at FedEx Park Sunday.
