MEMPHIS, TENN. – Zach Segal pitched eight solid innings and the University of Cincinnati baseball team scored seven runs in the top of the fifth inning to win the nightcap of a series-opening doubleheader at Memphis, 11-3, in American Athletic Conference action on Friday at FedExPark.
Cincinnati (16-16, 5-6 AAC) trailed 2-0 early but plated six runs in the fifth before an out was recorded to break things open. Ryan Nicholson started the inning off with a walk and the Bearcats had six straight hits with RBI efforts on singles by Jake Hansen and Cole Harting, a ground-rule double by Joey Bellini and a sac fly by Eric Santiago.
Nicholson batted a second time in the frame and belted an RBI single of his own to center field. He finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two walks.
Bellini added a solo home run in the eighth and finished with two hits, two runs scored and a walk to go with his 3 RBIs.
Segal (2-3) put together the longest outing of his collegiate career, going 8.0 innings, giving up three runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Memphis (11-21, 1-9 AAC) scored all three runs because of a pair of long balls off the bat of Hunter Goodman. He had a two-run shot to left in the third and a solo homer in the eighth.
Jackson Murphy pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close the game out.
