CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati tight end Josh Whyle (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle) was named to the 2021 preseason watch list for the John Mackey Award, the Friends of John Mackey announced Friday.
The John Mackey Award is given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end. The award recipient is selected by a vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee. The 2021 Mackey Award recipient will be announced in December at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show.
Whyle earned Third-Team All-America honors from Pro Football Focus and Second-Team All-AAC accolades at tight end after a breakout 2020 campaign. He led the team with 353 receiving yards on 28 catches with six touchdowns. The junior-to-be entered 2020 with two career catches for 51 yards and surpassed that in the season opener against Austin Peay with 3 receptions for 61 yards and his first career TD. According to PFF, he generated a 92.9 receiving grade and 2.94 yards per route run, both of which trailed only Kyle Pitts for the best among NCAA FBS tight ends.
Cincinnati opens the 2021 season on Saturday, Sept. 4, against Miami (OH) in the 125th Battle for the Victory Bell at 3:30 p.m. ET inside Nippert Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and fans are encouraged to sign up for the digital platform online.
