TicketsCINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder (Louisville, Kentucky/St. Xavier) was named one of 35 "players to watch" for the 2021 Walter Camp Football Foundation Player of the Year award, the nation's fourth-oldest individual college football accolade announced Friday.
UC's senior signal caller was one also named to the watch lists for the Davey O'Brien Award and Maxwell Award.
The 2021 watch list will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists in mid-November. The 2021 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 130 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced live on ESPN on Thursday, December 9. The winner will then receive his trophy at the Foundation's 55th annual national awards banquet on January 15, 2022 in New Haven, Conn.
Ridder enters his senior season at UC as the No. 2 passer in school history, throwing for 6,905 yards and 57 touchdowns over his previous three seasons. He recently joined some of the other top QBs in the nation as counselors at the annual Manning Passing Academy,
He was the 2020 American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year, 2021 AAC Championship Game Most Outstanding Player and 2018 AAC Rookie of the Year, helping lead the Bearcats to a 2020 AAC Championship and an appearance in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, a New Year's Six game.
A finalist for the 2020 Manning Award, Ridder has 22 career rushing TDs, most ever for a UC QB and tied for No. 8 in the Bearcats annals. He is the active career leader in winning percentage among NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision signal callers, winning over 88% of his career starts.
Off the field, he has earned his bachelor's degree and was tabbed as a First-Team Academic All-District honoree by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Cincinnati opens the 2021 season on Saturday, Sept. 4, against Miami (OH) in the 125th Battle for the Victory Bell at 3:30 p.m. ET inside Nippert Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and fans are encouraged to sign up for the digital platform online.
