CINCINNATI -- Vanessa Gilles' third-straight start was another fantastic one, and Canada's late goal allowed it to defeat the United States, 1-0, on Monday morning in the Olympic semifinals. Next up is Thursday's gold-medal bout against Sweden, set for 10 p.m. ET.
Gilles recorded 19 clearances in the match, which was six more than the entire US team and 45 percent of Canada's total. Three of those were headers away from the Canadian box in the final minutes, with CBC commenters remarking her as "arguably Canada's player of the match."
Canada is seeking its first-ever major tournament championship after claiming the silver in 2012 and 2016.
Gilles (2014-17) helped UC to the 2015 AAC title while also claiming the league's Defensive Player of the Year honors as a senior, among many other accomplishments.

Gilles was huge for #CanWNT this game, looked pretty composed under pressure even when required to do some hasty clearance in front of goal https://t.co/fjd44aOyGe

Few defenders/defences have covered themselves in glory this Olympics, Gilles a rare exception, has fully grown into the tournament https://t.co/TGrOSQ8fYS
