CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati lacrosse team fell to Ohio State, 18-9, Wednesday evening at Nippert Stadium.
The loss moves the Bearcats' record to 0-2 on the young season and improves Ohio State's record to 2-0.
The Bearcats were led offensively by senior attacker Kylie Nause. She scored three goals, one in the second, third and fourth quarters. Sophomore midfielder Ava Goeller and junior attacker Grace Wehland also pitched in two goals.
Although the final score indicates that it was Ohio State's game the whole way, the Bearcats had hope well into the third quarter.
The Bearcats were down 5-1 and 7-2 in the first half, but they would not go away easily. Two quick goals at the beginning of the third quarter by Wehland cut the deficit to only four goals, then UC would go on to rip off three-straight after an OSU score. The three goals were scored in just three minutes and two seconds, trimming OSU's lead down to just two goals at 10-8.
Unfortunately for the Bearcats, the goals for their side would end there.
Ohio State scored eight straight goals after the quick run by UC, and that would seal the game. Nause managed to notch her second hat-trick of the season with just 39 seconds left in the game.
FROM GINA THOMAS
"We talked about minimalizing our (offensive) lulls from the Marquette game, and I'm real happy our team made the switch coming into this game. We have a lot of young and inexperienced kids, so the more opportunities we get to play and get into new situations, the better we'll be in the long run. We are playing a tough go early on for a reason: to get our kids in front of solid opponents to be ready for conference play. I think the more you can stay positive with what you can take from cleaning up things to taking advantage of when games are close and putting that nail in the coffin and continue to close it, the better it'll be for us. I think that comes from experience and playing close games."
NOTABLE
-Ohio State now leads the all-time series 9-1.
-Goeller now has seven goals in two games this year, which ties with Nause for the team-lead.
-Nause had five hat tricks last season (31 goals total), and ranks seventh in school history with 83. Today was her second hat-trick of the season.
-Freshman Kylie Gioia scored her first-ever collegiate goal in the third quarter.
-Junior midfielder Peyton Mottice scored her second goal of the year.
