Bearcats Battle at Day One of AAC Championships

DALLAS – The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving teams kicked off the AAC Championships on Wednesday night at in the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium on Wednesday.

DALLAS – The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving teams kicked off the AAC Championships on Wednesday night at in the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium on Wednesday.
 
Day One of proceedings featured the men's one-meter dive, women's three-meter dive and women's and men's 200-yard medley and 800-yard freestyle relays.
 
The women's programs are facing off against ECU, Houston, Tulane and SMU, while the men's finals feature the Bearcats going head-to-head against SMU for the championship. 
 
FINISHES OF NOTE
 
A new school record was set tonight in the men's 800-yard freestyle relay as of the team of junior Calvin Coetzee, freshman Quinton Cynor, junior Michael Balcerak and sophomore Hunter Gubeno raced to a time of 6:22.84.
 
The women's 800-yard freestyle relay featured sophomore Erin Shema, graduate student Maddie Exton, sophomore Jessica Davis and senior Sydney St. Rose-Finear and clocked a time of 7:11.80,which is good for the second-fastest mark in school history.
 
Shema's 1:47.32 split placed her in the top three in school history for the 200-yard freestyle. 
 
ALL FINISHES
 
Freshman Joey Basha, senior Zane Freeman, junior Luke Cheetham and freshman Will Claus all qualified earlier in the day for the A-Final in the one-meter dive. In the finals, Claus finished  (300.35), Basha came in sixth  (276.95) and Freeman (276.70) and Cheetham (265.65) rounded out the top eight.
 
Graduate student Audrey Capannari booked a place in the B-Finals in the three-meter dive with a score of 227.75. 
 
Senior Blake Hanna, graduate student Dominic Polling, Balcerak and Gubeno touched the wall with a 1:26.23 in the 200-yard medley relay, which is now a second-best time in UC's history.
