Bearcats Dominate Cleveland State, 6-1

CLEVELAND – The University of Cincinnati tennis team completed a weekend sweep with a 6-1 victory over Cleveland State Sunday afternoon at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion. UC improves to 4-3 on the season.

CLEVELAND – The University of Cincinnati tennis team completed the weekend sweep with a 6-1 victory over Cleveland State Sunday afternoon at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion. UC improves to 4-3 on the season.

Duos Cassie McClay and Elizabeth Pendergast rebounded on court one to score a doubles victory and Callie Flanagan and Kelli Niehaus earned another win on court three to secure the doubles point for UC.

In singles play, Elizabeth Pendergast got an early lead over Oihane Vicario on court one and rebounded in the third set to get back into the win column, improving to 2-4 on the season. 

Ioana Guna rebounded from Saturday's loss to earn the victory on court two over Sima Heren, going 6-2, 2-6, and 6-4, to improve to 4-3 on the season.

Kelli Niehuas, who moved up to court five, secured her fifth win on the season and stayed undefeated in singles action when she swept the match against Bethany Yauch, going 6-0 and 7-5.

Maria Santilli improves to 3-3 in singles play after sweeping Selma Tounsi on court four, going 6-2 and 6-4.

Callie Flanagan earned a spot in the singles rotation on court six, sweeping Tereze Vevere 6-3 and 7-6(5) to improve to 2-2 on the season.

Cassie McLay moves to 3-4 on the season after putting up a tough battle against Klara Mrcela, however Cleveland State earned their only point with Mrcela's victory over McLay.

"Today was a complete team effort. We had to dip into our depth today and everyone did a great job competing from start to finish. A solid weekend beating two good teams, especially after a bit of a layoff."

With this win, Coach Toth improves to 77 career wins as the Bearcats head coach. He is two wins away from securing the No. 2 spot all-time and surpassing Marty Wolf's 79 career wins.
