CINCINNATI -- University of Cincinnati senior Joey McCarthy earned Canadian PGA Tour qualifications after his excellent showing at the Q-School USA East Tournament in Weston, Fla.
McCarthy, a Queen City native and St. Xavier graduate as well, carded a 1-over 289 at the event to tie for 20th, filling the scorecard with a 71-76-73-69. Bearcat teammates Clay Amlung (72 in each of his last two rounds) and Mason Lenhart (69 in his last one to finish 39th) also performed well on the high stage.
"I am really excited for Joey," head coach Doug Martin said. "This sets him up to have somewhere to play when he turns pro after the season. Overall, this was a great experience for our seniors to play in their first qualifying school and get an early taste of professional golf. Joey, Clay and Mason will all benefit from this experience."
Other notable professionals in the UC ranks include alumnus Jim Herman, who last year competed in his second Masters, and Austin Squires, who is on the Korn Ferry Tour.
McCarthy this fall was the team's second-best performer behind Sam Jean with a 72.25 stroke average (career-low so far), including a second-place finish at the Purdue Fall Invitational and two other top-20s out of four overall events. His other lowest-season score came last year (73.33).
UC begins its six-tourney spring slate Feb. 28 at the Coral Creek Club Invitational in Placida, Fla.
