CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team is back home in Fifth Third Arena Wednesday, Feb. 9 when it welcomes the SMU Mustangs for a 7 p.m. game.
THE SERIES
Cincinnati leads overall series 6-4 and leads 3-2 in Fifth Third Arena.
Last time out, UC used a big third quarter to blow open a close contest on its way to scoring a big 73-58 win on the road at SMU on March 8, 2020. The Mustangs did not play the 2020-21 season due to COVID-19.
SCOUTING THE BEARCATS
Cincinnati is 10-11 overall and 3-6 in American Athletic Conference action. The Bearcats have won three of their last five games.
Last time out, UC fell on the road to Memphis, 66-54, on Wednesday night at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Sophomore forward Malea Williams led the Bearcats with 12 points, going 5-for-10 from the field and shooting 50%. Junior guard Caitlyn Wilson added 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Junior point guard Akira Levy leads the team in points per game (11.8) and assists (109). Sophomore guard Jillian Hayes leads the team in points (246), field goals made a game (4.0), free throws made (76), rebounds (150), steals (45) and blocks (29) while junior forward Caitlyn Wilson leads the team in three point shots (45) and three point shots a game (2.1).
The Bearcats continue to stay in the top of the AAC in blocked shots and 21st in the NCAA with 105.

SMU is 10-8 overall and 4-2 in the American. The Mustangs have won six of their last eight games.
Last time out, the team suffered it's second conference loss, falling 60-55 to Houston in Moody Coliseum. Senior forward Danielle Sanderlin grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds, and Smith led SMU in scoring with 16 points, making four 3-pointers. Senior forward Savannah Wilkinson finished with 10 and pulled down five rebounds with five steals and three assists. Graduate guard Sydne Wiggins also finished in double digits, scoring 13 points.
Wilkinson is 14th in the NCAA with 12 double- doubles. She averages a double-double with 15.0 pts and 10.3 rebbounds, which is 31st nationally. Kayla White scored a career-high 34 against ECU, the most by a player in The American this season. She is averaging 13.7 points per game.

This season is the 50th anniversary of the Women's Basketball program. Then known as the Lady Bearcats, the team finished it's first season in 1971 with a 9-6 record. The Bearcats have been led by Mary Jo Huismann, former men's basketball player Tom Thacker (1974-1978, 55-43), Ceal Barry (1979-1981, 83-42), Sandy Smith (1983-1986, 49-37), Laurie Pirtle (1986-2007, most wins in program history with 310), and Jamelle Elliott (2009-2017, 113-162).
In conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Title IX, we will celebrate and honor 50 seasons of Bearcats' women's basketball on Saturday, Feb. 19 when the Bearcats host ECU for a 2 p.m. game.
