PLACIDA, Fla. -- Joey McCarthy and Ty Gingerich carded 3-over 145s to lead the Cincinnati men's golf team in the first and second rounds of the Coral Creek Club Invitational.
McCarthy had a team-best seven birdies overall to go with a team-low 70 in the second round, while Clay Amlung grabbed a birdie on the par-five, 476-yard No. 13 hole.
"We got off to a good start this morning and played 13-14 solid holes but were unable to finish the round off," head coach Doug Martin said. "Too many unforced errors that we cannot make at critical times. The afternoon round was very similar to the first. At day's end, we three-putted 12 times. On tough days, sometimes a good iron is 25-40 feet from the flag. You must have great speed control to avoid three-putting. Tomorrow, we must continue working on playing clean golf."
Cincinnati had the fifth-best score on par-5s for the field and is just three stokes from the top-eight.
UC in the fall had its best round in three of five tournaments and will look to replicate that success Tuesday.
