SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The University of Cincinnati baseball team lost Monday, falling to the South Carolina Upstate Spartans by final score of 8-3.

Freshman Garrett Harker (0-1) started and took the loss on the mound for Cincinnati (6-7).

At the plate, the Bearcats were paced by redshirt sophomore infielder Ryan Nicholson, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a double and a walk. Sophomore outfielder Cole Harting had a nice day at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Redshirt sophomore catcher Joe Powell put together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding two walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Bearcats got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Nicholson came across to score the lone run of the inning for Cincinnati and got the team on the board.

The Bearcats lost the lead they built in the second, but got back on the board in the fourth inning, trailing, 2-1. Harting's run-scoring single highlighted an inning where Cincinnati scored twice, which brought the score to 3-2 in favor of the Bearcats. The Bearcats were unable to hold the lead, as South Carolina Upstate scored six times over the remaining five innings to grab the 8-3 win.

GAME NOTES

  • Cincinnati pitchers limited South Carolina Upstate to just 1-for-12 (.083) with runners in scoring position.
  • Harker threw six innings for the second-straight time in his young career. 
  • Powell walked twice today, improving his on-base percentage to .429 on the year, the second-best on the team. He also recorded a hit for the fourth-straight game, the longest active streak on the team.
  • UC has recorded at least six hits in 12 of its 14 games this season.
