TicketsSTATESBORO, Ga. – Senior Clay Amlung recorded a hole-in-one to pace the Cincinnati men's golf team to a second-place standing after Round 1 of competition at the Schenkel Invitational on Friday.
The Bearcats shot a 5-under 283 and are 10 shots back of first-place Georgia Southern. UC is tied with Notre Dame and West Virginia at the 54-hole tournament that will conclude on Sunday at the par-72, 7,123-yard Forest Heights Country Club.
UC was led by senior Joey McCarthy and Amlung, who both carded 2-under 70s and tied for 11th. McCarthy also had a hole-in-one at the Badger Invitational this fall.
Amlung had a hole-in-one on the 130-yard, par 3, sixth hole, while McCarty had an eagle on hole No. 7.
"We played extremely well again for the first 13-14 holes, but we missed some great opportunities down the stretch," head coach Doug Martin said. "Overall, I'm pleased with the day and our start. Clay (Amlung) and Joey (McCarthy) both played solid rounds until the very end, but ended up making a couple bogies to finish their rounds. We will need to clean up a few things before tomorrow's round."
Sophomore Ty Gingerich is tied for 23rd after tallying a 1-under 71, while junior Sam Jean recorded an even-par 72 to round out the scoring. Jean is tied for 28th.
Redshirt senior Mason Lenhart finished Round 1 with a 4-over 76 and is a tie for 66th.
Sophomore Cole Harris, competing as an individual, is tied for 78th after carding a 6-over 72.
Cincinnati, ranked No. 56 in the nation, is one of seven Top-75 teams competing at the invitational.
The Bearcats begin Round 2 at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday in a group with College of Charleston and Furman.
