CINCINNATI -- University of Cincinnati women's basketball player Sofia Gritzali is set to take part in the American Athletic Conference's Academic Symposium at the FedEx Institute of Technology on the campus of the University of Memphis from April 7 to April 9.
The academic symposium, the signature event of the conference's academic consortium, returns as an in-person event for the first time since 2019 and brings together scholars and students from across the conference engaged in research related to student-athlete well-being to share information and foster the development of collaboration among the conference.
Gritzali, a junior from Thessaloniki, Greece, was selected by the department to represent the Bearcats down in Memphis. She will take part in the 8:30 a.m. student panel on Saturday, April 9 where she will talk about "Living the Life: The Student-Athlete Experience" with four other AAC student-athletes along with joining other discussions over the weekend.
"I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to represent the Bearcats at the AAC Academic Symposium in Memphis," Gritzali said. "This symposium is a great way to share my perspective and experience on the life of a student-athlete while also engaging and connecting with other student-athletes from our conference. It is an amazing opportunity to spread awareness and connect our conference through panels, speakers, and research grants. Being chosen as the representative from UC Athletics is an honor and I look forward to having a small impact on the student-athlete experience!"
The American Athletic Conference Academic Consortium was founded in 2016 as a presidential initiative by the conference's member institutions to promote academic excellence and to develop opportunities for collaboration and professional development for faculty, administrators, and students. The core focus of the consortium is the establishment of research and formulation of programming relative to student well-being, with particular emphasis on the issues surrounding college athletics. The consortium aims at fostering partnerships among member institutions and developing initiatives that advance the academic mission at each institution.
The 2022 symposium will begin Thursday, April 7, with a reception at the Laurie-Walton Family Basketball Complex. The formal program begins Friday, April 8 and goes until Saturday, April 9 with presentations of grant-funded research and topical discussions. This year's agenda includes a broad range of topics, including injury prevention and nutrition, mental health, diversity, equity and inclusion, and the future of Division I athletics
