CINCINNATI – With the Bearcats looking to push into the conference tournament we caught up with junior attacker Grace Wehland to talk about her expanded role, background, and the team's mindset going into the last three regular-season games.

Wehland is a native of Bel Air, Md. and has scored 13 goals with six assists this season after playing nine games her first two years. She was also named to the AAC's All-Academic team for the 2020-2021 season and is majoring in finance while minoring in accounting.

The Bearcats will travel to Norfolk, Va., to take on Old Dominion, Saturday at 12 p.m.

Some of your best games are against your best opponents. Do you get excited or look forward to playing good teams?
"I do get excited. When playing the good teams, you must be on your best. Something in the back of my head tells me I must step it up."

What is the team's mindset going into the last three games of the season?
"Our mindset is to finish strong. We only have three games left but hopefully we have four or five if we make the conference tournament. That is the big thing, we must win at least two games to make it in. We really need to step up and finish this season out. So, our mindset is that we have to win."

Being a junior this year you have stepped into an expanded role. How has this season felt different personally than the last two seasons?
"Yeah, the first two years I didn't play much, and I also went through injuries. This year is the first year no injuries have happened to me. I also have a large role on the team. I feel a responsibility to play hard and get better while also helping my teammates get better."

What injuries did you have?
"My senior year of high school I tore my ACL, MCL and meniscus. So, coming into freshman year of college I was still recovering from that. My second game I played in freshmen year I tore my other ACL."

You guys play Old Dominion next game and will be playing your former teammate Monica Borzillo (2017-21). Are you and the team excited to play her?
"Yeah, I think it is going to be funny. I am excited to see her and play her team. I want to see how she is on the sideline and how she is as a coach. I just think it will be funny. I am excited. We've changed up some things (with the new staff), and we also have a very different team after graduating so many people."

You and sophomore Ava Goeller went to the same high school and were teammates. What is your relationship like with her and did you influence her to come to UC at all?
"I don't know if I would say I influenced her to come to UC. I know when she was looking here, she talked to me a lot about it. I told her to come here because it is a great school and we have a great team. I guess that I helped her a little bit. In high school we were always friends, and we also played soccer together too. We have good chemistry on the field."

Besides lacrosse what else do you like to do in your free time?
"I like to hang out with my friends. I like to enjoy my down time. I don't mind just chilling. So pretty much hanging out with my friends and doing fun activities together like Top Golf, for example."

What is your major and plans for after graduation?
"My major is finance, and my minor is accounting. After graduation I want to get my MBA. I don't know if that will be here or somewhere else. I have not decided that yet. I also want to move to a new city and see if I can get a job wherever I end up."
