BROOKSVILLE, Fla. -- Ty Gingerich carded a 3-under 69 to tie for second as the Cincinnati men's golf team completed its first of three rounds at the AAC Championships. Cincinnati is seventh.
Gingerich had five birdies, including three over a four-hole span to finish one stroke off the lead. It was his fourth round in the 60s this year and second in three tournaments (68 to open the Mason Rudolph Championship).
"Overall, with the exception of Ty, we played poorly," head coach Doug Martin said. "We didn't get off to a very good start with some careless errors early and didn't recover moving forward. We have a lot of holes left to play, and the wind is forecasted to blow the next two days, which gives us a great opportunity to make up some ground."
Sam Jean and Joey McCartthy were just one-over with a 73 to tie for 21st, with Clay Amlung and Mason Lenhart rounding it out. The Bearcats' 292 was six strokes better than its last opener at the Hawkeye Invitational, which included some less-than-ideal weather.
Second-round coverage is available on Golfstat.com. UC has improved its score from the first-to-second rounds four times this year.
