TicketsCINCINNATI -- Redshirt junior outfielder Paul Komistek racked up four hits, but the Cincinnati Bearcats fell to the East Carolina Pirates, 8-4, on Saturday. The series-winner will be decided in game three tomorrow at noon.
Senior pitcher Beau Keathley (2-1) got the ball to start for Cincinnati (10-15, 1-1) and took the loss. He threw six strong innings for the Bearcats, keeping them into the game. He had only given up one run going into the sixth inning, but ECU got three more on the board to extend its lead.
In addition to his four hits, Komistek had a walk to get on base five times for the Bearcats. Redshirt sophomore infielder Max Palmieri compiled a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and two RBIs. Sophomore outfielder Cole Harting also chipped in for Cincinnati, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 4-0, the Bearcats first put runs on the board in the sixth inning. Cincinnati scored twice on a bases loaded two-run double off the bat of Palmieri.
The Bearcats deficit expanded to 5-2 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the seventh inning. Cincinnati brought home a pair, with one run driven in by Harting's single, which tightened the Pirates lead to 5-4. The Bearcats were unable to get any closer, as East Carolina added three runs to their tally on the way to an 8-4 final.
GAME NOTES
» Komistek put together a four-hit day for the Bearcats, reaching base all five times at the plate. His .394 average leads the team, and his .474 on-base percentage is tied with redshirt sophomore Joe Powell for the team-lead.
» Palmieri knocked in his third and fourth RBIs of the season on a bases loaded two-run double in the bottom of the sixth. He has three RBIs so far this series.
» Keathley had a solid start on the mound, going six innings, giving up four runs and striking out six.
» Powell and Harting each had a pair of hits today. Powell is 4-for-8 in this series and Harting is 3-for-7.
