CINCINNATI – The Cincinnati lacrosse team outshot No. 10 Florida 15-7 in the fourth quarter, but the Gators held on for a 19-12 victory on Monday at Nippert Stadium. The game was previously scheduled for Sunday but postponed due to travel issues.
Florida held a 16-6 advantage in the third quarter. Cincinnati fought back, however, to outscore UF, 6-3, down the stretch.
The Bearcats' 12 goals are the most they have ever scored against the Gators, a perennial national power.
Senior Kylie Nause led the Bearcats with four goals. She moved into sole possession of second-place in the UC single-season record books with 49 goals on the season. She is within striking distance of Monica Borzillo's school-record 61 goals set in 2019.
Junior Grace Wehland scored two goals and tallied an assist, while graduate student Alyssa Adams also added a pair of goals. Wehland's three points matched a season-high, also against No. 11 Michigan in Nippert Stadium.
Sophomore Ava Goeller had a goal and three assists.
UC held a 38-34 edge in shots, but Florida had a 28-20 advantage in shots on goal. Cincinnati was also given seven yellow cards.
The Gators took a quick 2-0 lead in the match's first two minutes.
UC fought back behind two goals from Nause in the first frame, the second of which brought UC within a goal, 3-2, at the 5:32 mark in the first period.
Adams zipped past the defense for an unassisted goal with 24 seconds left in first quarter to bring UC within a pair of goals, 5-3, at the end of the first quarter.
Junior Grace Wehland's goal two-and-half minutes into the second period made the score 5-4.
UC had a chance to tie the match over the next 90 seconds, but three shots were wide, and Florida's Emma LoPinto (five goals, two assists) took advantage of a Cincinnati turnover with a goal at the 10:26 mark that kept the Gators in front, 6-4.
Three straight goals by the Gators midway through the second quarter extended UF's lead to 10-5. Adams' second goal brought UC within four, 10-6, with 3:56 remaining in the first half, but UF's Paisley Eagan answered with under two minutes left to make it 11-6 at the break.
The Gators scored five straight goals to open the second half, but UC refused to quit.
Wehland scored her 13th goal of the season with 6:33 left in the third frame, while freshman Kylie Gioia netted a goal with 19 seconds left in the quarter to make the score 16-8.
The Bearcats outscored the Gators 4-3 in the final period with Nause capping the scoring with her fourth goal with 1:09 left.
FROM GINA THOMAS
"We talked about this a lot this season, but we've had a lot of solid gameplans and done a solid job until there's a 10 or 15-minute lull where good teams are able to take advantage of that. We did a good job of it today, but just not for 60 minutes. Sophie O'Brien made some solid saves and Grace Wehland played very tough on the offensive end. Kylie Nause and Ava Goeller gave us some more aggressiveness. We need everyone to step up and get us some balls in the back of the net. Scoring 12 goals against a very good Florida team, if we can tighten up more on the draw and defensive end, we can be in good position.
