TicketsCOLUMBUS, Ohio -- Sam Jean carded a 5-over 77 in his first day of the NCAA Regionals at the OSU Golf Club's Scarlet Course.
"We had some wind today that softened up the golf course a little bit with the heavy rains from last night," head coach Doug Martin said. "One of the keys here is there's a good rough and tough fairways, and it's important to drive the ball there. Sam hit 11 of his 14, and another thing is that typically he's a very good iron player, and his proximity wasn't all the way there, but there are 36 holes and a great opportunity over that time. He just has to do a better job executing from the fairway and getting closer to the flags so he doesn't have to work so much on the greens."
The Greenwood, Ind., native had two birdies on the day, fighting through a pair of bogeys at the start. Tee-time was delayed an hour due to overnight rain, and a lightning delay came again at 3:51 p.m. just minutes after his final hole.
The top individual, not on one of the participating teams, will claim a spot in the NCAA Championship at the end of the month as Jean jumps back into it for Tuesday's second round.
