COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Sam Jean carded a 2-under 69, an eight-stroke improvement from Monday's opening round, to take the fourth spot heading into Wednesday's final of the NCAA Regional.

Jean's 69 matched the lowest round of any individual competitor of the week, while his improvement was the largest of the 10 in contention for the top spot and trip to the national championship. He is six strokes behind Thomas Giroux (Oakland), with two others in the middle as well for a fourth-place spot.

Out of 75 golfers in the field, Jean was the only one without a bogey Tuesday.

"Yesterday and today were night-and-day compared to each other," Jean said. "I worked on quickening my pace and not thinking as much over the ball, and I think that helped a lot to play faster and with more confidence. It was nice to par the first few (after bogeys on the first two Monday)."

Jean even birdied his final hole to cap off the marvelous day. He will tee off at 9:23 a.m. Wednesday to close it out.

"I think he looked very comfortable on the golf course today," head coach Doug Martin said. "He stuck to his routine, and that's something we talked about. To have 16 pars and two birdies on a championship course like this speaks volumes. If you look through all the scores today, you won't find many bogey-free rounds. It speaks to Sam's toughness and ability to bounce back, especially with high expectations yesterday."
