McElroy Advances to NCAA Quarterfinals in 400m Dash

Competition at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships started today with the first rounds of track events and the quarterfinals in field events. Freshman Steven McElroy led the Bearcats with his top-three finish in his heat of the 400-meter dash, earning an automatic qualifying spot in Friday's quarterfinal.

Bloomington, Ind. – Competition at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships started today with the first rounds of track events and the quarterfinals in field events. Freshman Steven McElroy led the Bearcats with his top-three finish in his heat of the 400-meter dash, earning an automatic qualifying spot in Friday's quarterfinal. 

UC ATHLETE PERFORMANCES
Steven McElroy – 400-meter Dash:
McElroy earned an automatic spot in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Friday by finishing third in his heat with a time of 46.86. He ran a great race from lane nine, pacing himself throughout the lap to finish in a position that would send him on to the next round of competition. 
 
Austin Edwards – Long Jump:
Edwards ended his career as a Bearcat with a jump of 7.38m (24' 2.50") into a headwind to finish in 17th in the NCAA Quarterfinals of the long jump. He scored his best jump of the day on his final jump.
 
Sam Meece – Hammer Throw
Meece threw a season best of 61.44m (201' 7") on his final throw as a Bearcat to place 28th at the NCAA quarterfinals in the hammer throw, 16 places ahead of his initial ranking of 46th. He improved upon each throw today to take third in the first flight of throwers and end with his furthest mark of the year less than one meter off his school record. 
 
Tyler Wirth – 1,500-meter Run:
Wirth finished his sophomore season with the Bearcats in a close 1,500-meter race. The pack stayed tight for the first three laps and spread out more toward the end. Wirth finished in eighth in his heat, having needed to be top five to advance. His time of 3:50.06 ended 36th overall, improving ten spots from his ranking going into the day. 
 
Austin Goolsby – Pole Vault
Goolsby cleared 5.04m (16' 6.50") to finish in 32nd in the quarterfinals of the pole vault. He previously cleared the first height of the day as well and came close to clearing the next stage of 5.19m (17' 0.25") on a windy day in Bloomington. 
 
NEXT UP
Day two of the NCAA East Regional Qualifying meet will take place tomorrow. Bearcats will be competing in the women's javelin and long jump finals as well as the first rounds of the 100-, 200- and 1,500-meter races. The meet will start at 10 a.m. with the hammer throw and run until the conclusion of the 10,000-meter run at 9:10 p.m. 
 
McElroy will compete again in the 400-meter dash on Friday at 6:50 p.m. when he will hope to move on to NCAA semifinals in Eugene, Ore.
