CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The University of Cincinnati baseball team fell to East Carolina Thursday, 15-5, in the second round of the 2022 AAC Tournament. The Bearcats will face Tulane Friday in a rematch of the first round, with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. ET.

Graduate pitcher Tristan Weaver (5-6) got the ball to start for Cincinnati (24-30) and took the loss.

At the plate, the Bearcats were paced by redshirt freshman infielder Kerrington Cross, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a home run and two RBIs. Sophomore outfielder Cole Harting also hit well, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Redshirt junior outfielder Griffin Merritt also contributed for Cincinnati, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Bearcats were trailing 5-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Cross put Cincinnati on the board with a leadoff home run off sophomore Josh Grosz.

The Pirates expanded their lead to 8-1 before the Bearcats offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the fifth. The Cincinnati offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a one-run groundout off the bat of redshirt senior infielder Wyatt Stapp, which tightened the Pirates lead to 8-5. The Bearcats were unable to get any closer, as East Carolina added seven runs to their tally on the way to a 15-5 final.
