CINCINNATI – The Cincinnati track and field teams will send Ellie Leather, Steven McElroy and Leonie Troeger to the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championship Meet this week in Eugene, Ore. The meet will take place at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon.
ELLIE LEATHER – 1,500M RUN
The senior will be finishing up her career as a Bearcat at the NCAA Championship meet in the 1,500-meter run. Leather is going into the meet ranked second in the nation as she finished in second at the NCAA East Preliminary quarterfinals with a time of 4:11.33, breaking her own school record and setting a new personal best by almost three seconds.
Leather has had a successful senior year, placing third in the indoor mile at the NCAA Indoor Championship meet, earning All-America honors. She was also the first Bearcat on the women's cross-country team to compete at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in 2021. She was a five-time American Athletic Conference champion this year and holds five school records.
STEVEN MCELROY – 400M DASH
In his first year on the UC Track and Field team, freshman McElroy has distinguished himself as a top competitor in the 400-meter dash. He is going into the NCAA Championship meet ranked 21st in the event after running 45.81 at the NCAA East quarterfinals in the event.
This year, McElroy was the American Athletic Conference champion in the indoor and outdoor 400-meter dash. He first set the UC freshman record at the UF Tom Jones Invitational in April then set the new AAC and UC record in the event at the conference championship in May with a time of 45.57.
LEONIE TROEGER – JAVELIN THROW
Troeger has spent the final few weeks of the outdoor track and field season making marks in the UC record book and throwing her way into the NCAA Championship meet. She goes into the meet ranked in 13th with her throw of 52.13m, which placed sixth at the East Regional meet.
Troeger had an excellent comeback late in the season after recovering from an injury during the indoor season and the beginning of outdoor season. She first competed this year at the Billy Hayes Invitational during the first week of May, where she won the javelin throw. She then set a new UC school record of 53.11m at the AAC championship meet, where she took second place.
MEET SCHEDULE
The meet is composed of two days of preliminary competition and two days of finals in the track events, with field event finals taking place every day. All times are listed in EST.
McElroy will be the first to compete in the 400-meter dash semifinals on Weds. June 8 at 9 p.m. The 400-meter dash final will then take place on Fri. June 10 at 10:02 p.m.
Troeger and Leather will first compete on Thurs. June 9. Troeger will compete in the javelin finals at 9:45 p.m. and Leather will compete in the 1,500-meter semifinals at 8:46 p.m. The 1,500-meter finals will then take place on Sat. June 11 at 5:41 p.m.
