CINCINNATI -- Redshirt junior outfielder Griffin Merritt was named to the CoSIDA Academic All‐America® Baseball Team on Wednesday. He becomes just the fourth University of Cincinnati baseball player to earn the honor and the first since Ian Happ, who was the only other First Team selection in 2015.
Merritt had an outstanding season at the plate, batting .315 with an OPS of 1.077. His 19 home run campaign led the American Athletic Conference and is now tied for third-most ever by a Bearcat in a single season. Merritt also paced the AAC in slugging percentage (.695) and RBIs per game (1.02). In addition to earning All-AAC First Team honors, Merritt became just the second UC player to be named American Athletic Conference Player of the Year on May 23.
The left fielder from La Salle High School in Cincinnati has been the baseball team's representative on the UC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee since 2019 and has been named to the Dean's List all eight semesters he's been enrolled at UC. Earlier this season Merritt was named to the CoSIDA 2021-22 Academic All-District® Baseball Team.
Merritt's list of achievements does not stop there, as he was a finalist for both the Jean Stephens Memorial Award and the Male Nancy Hamant Scholar-Athlete of the Year award in 2021-22. A two-time team captain of the Bearcats baseball team, Merritt has been named to the All-AAC Academic team three times (2019-2021).
Merritt becomes one of just four Bearcats to be selected as a CoSIDA Academic All‐American, joining Craig Tewes in 2001 (2nd Team), Jack Nelson in 2006 (3rd Team) and Ian Happ in 2015 (1st Team). The selection also gives the University of Cincinnati an impressive five CoSIDA Academic All-Americans for the 2021-22 school year. He joins football players Desmond Ridder (1st Team), Alec Pierce (1st Team), Brian Cook (2nd Team) and Lorenz Metz (2nd Team) who earned acclaim in the fall.
