CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team battled Michigan State to a scoreless draw on Sunday afternoon at Gettler Stadium.
With the tie, Cincinnati moves to 1-0-1 (0-0-0 AAC) on the season.
"I thought our team demonstrated great resilience today," said head coach Neil Stafford. "A few of our freshmen really stepped up in a big way. With the weather delays and stop-start that we endured, I was really proud of the mentality and fight that our players showed this afternoon."
Goalkeeper Anna Rexford recorded a pair of saves to secure the shutout and earn her second straight clean sheet, erasing the Spartans' best look of the match with a full extension save in the 76th minute. This is the first time that Cincinnati has recorded consecutive shutouts since the Bearcats' held Temple and UCONN scoreless on Sept. 26 and Sept. 29 of 2019.
"Anna Rexford was outstanding today," Stafford added. "She keeps getting better every game. She looks way more decisive and confident than she ever has and is making huge saves for this team. Her play kept us in the game today."
After the kickoff time was delayed an hour for inclement weather, the Bearcats faced another 80-minute delay after 23 minutes of action. The two teams remained in the defensive battle as neither team was able to get clear attempts at the goal through the first 45 minutes.
Cincinnati held the possession advantage in the second half as the Bearcats' best chance came in the 84th minute when Brandi Thomsen collected a ball left of the top of the box before firing a shot outside of the top right of the frame, however, neither team was able to capitalize after regulation.
Cincinnati will be back in action on Thursday, Aug. 25 as they travel to face Bowling Green at 5:00 p.m. ET.
