Bearcats Drop Season Opener to Illinois State, 3-2

CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women's volleyball team dropped the season opener 3-2 to Illinois State on Friday at Fifth Third Arena.

CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women's volleyball team dropped its season opener, 3-2, to Illinois State on Friday morning inside Fifth Third Arena.
 
Freshmen Carly Gledinning and Caroline Enders shined in their collegiate debuts. Gledinning registered her first career double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs while Endres contributed a match-high 46 assists. AAC Preseason All-Conference Team honoree Abby Walker added a match-high 13 kills.

In addition, three Bearcats recorded double-digit digs, behind a team-high 18 from senior libero Payton Frederick.
 
// HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | The Bearcats found themselves in an early deficit, dropping the first set 25-16. Cincinnati trailed by as many as nine points as Illinois State grabbed the advantage for good at 10-9 in a set that was knotted up six times before the Redbirds took control.
 
SET 2 | The Bearcats scored first and never trailed in the set to secure a 25-23 second-set victory. Cincinnati took its largest lead of the set at 20-13 before fighting off a late Redbird comeback. UC hit .386 in the set and registered a set-high four blocks.
 
SET 3 | Cincinnati went up 2-1 in the match after dominating the third set, 25-12. Cincinnati ended on a high note, claiming its biggest lead of 13 points, to finish off the set. The Bearcats hit .493 in the set behind 14 kills and no attacking errors. Endres also tallied four straight service aces to spark the Bearcat run.
 
SET 4 | The Redbirds forced a fifth set with a 25-20 fourth-set win. Illinois State grabbed the advantage for good at 18-17. The fourth set saw six ties before the Redbirds took control late in the stanza.
 
SET 5 | Cincinnati owned a 9-3 advantage to start the fifth and final set, before Illinois State rallied to win the set, 15-12, and match, 3-2.
