Bearcats’ Block Not Enough in Four-Set Loss to Dayton

The Cincinnati volleyball team registered 16 blocks, but it wasn't enough as the Dayton Flyers defeated the Bearcats in four sets on Friday night in Fifth Third Arena.

CINCINNATI – The Cincinnati volleyball team registered 16 blocks, but it wasn't enough as the Dayton Flyers defeated the Bearcats in four sets on Friday night in Fifth Third Arena.
 
The Bearcats (0-2) will look to bounce back in their Tribute to #10 finale on Sunday against Florida State. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. on ESPN+. 
 
Sophomore Abby Walker finished with a team-high 14 kills to go along with a career-best eight blocks. Redshirt freshman Ligia Williams added eight blocks and seven kills in the loss.

Senior Payton Frederick finished with 17 digs on defense. With her first dig of the match, she joined the 1,000-career dig club. 
 
// HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | The Bearcats claimed the first set, 25-20. In a back-and-forth battle, Cincinnati ended the frame on a 4-0 scoring run, highlighted by kills from Walker and Kailea Carrier and a service ace from Payton Frederick. Walker put down six kills on six attempts in the set.  
 
SET 2 | Cincinnati dropped the second set 25-21, evening the match at a set apiece. The Bearcats led by as many as five (14-9) before Dayton used a 9-3 run to close out the set. 
 
SET 3 | A powerful defensive effort wasn't enough as the Bearcats dropped the third set, 26-24. Cincinnati totaled eight blocks in the frame, including four stuffs from Williams. The set saw 10 ties and eight lead changes before Dayton earned the win in extra points. 
 
SET 4 | Cincinnati dropped the fourth and final stanza, 25-18. The Bearcats hit -.100 in the frame with seven kills and 10 attacking errors on 30 attempts.
