CINCINNATI -- Home sweet home.

Sam Jean (7-under 206) and the University of Cincinnati men's golf team claimed the individual and team titles at the two-day Bearcat Invitational at Coldstream Country Club, the program's first home event since 2019.

It was the team's first championship since the season-opening Hoosier Collegiate Invite in Fall 2021, while it was Jean's second career victory (previously at the Badger Invitational in Fall 2021).

"Any time you win, and it's so hard to do it in collegiate athletics, it's special," head coach Doug Martin said. "I think when you go through it with experience and guys that have great shots, putts and up-and-downs over the past two days, I was just real impressed with this group."

Tuesday's final round also came after roughly an hour's fog delay. Cincinnati's 7-under 845 was the team's lowest total since the Colleton River Collegiate in March where the Bearcats carded a school-record 270 to close it out.

Jean's pair of 67s, after a team-high 72, in the first round included five birdies and an eagle over the final 36 holes. Today was also his birthday.

"With Sam, he continues to mature into a tremendous player," Martin said. "He was the last guy I saw at the completion of his first round, and he birdies his last hole and finishes with a 72. He comes over, hands me his scorecard, and I say 'we need you this afternoon, and you didn't count this morning.' He looked at me and said 'I'm counting this afternoon.' That's a fifth-year player who just wants to be great."

For Gingerich, his second-place finish and 6-under 207 each marked career-bests. His other second-place finish came in his collegiate debut, the Oldfield Invitational in Feb. 2021. His 66 also tied Jean the previous week and Wyatt Plattner on Monday for an individual season-low.

"Ty continues to persevere and get better," Martin said. "I've talked to him this summer about becoming an elite player, and I've told him he's one in development. He's done that the last two weeks. I can't say enough about him. As the week progressed and the course was playing extremely difficult, I was a little concerned because we don't normally see Coldstream play like that. I was real proud of the guys for hitting elite shots the last two days."

Freshman Ryan Ford, who had an eagle as part of a five-stroke improvement in the second round, continued his torrid pace with a career-low 67. As part of the rest of the scorecard, Plattner finished 33rd, while William McDonald and Rylan Wotherspoon were 37th and 44th, respectively.

Next up for the Bearcats is the Old Town Club Collegiate, Monday and Tuesday in Winston-Salem, N.C.
