The University of Cincinnati volleyball team dropped a tightly contested four-set decision to Houston on Sunday afternoon at the Fertitta Center in Houston, Texas.

HOUSTON, Texas – The University of Cincinnati volleyball team dropped a tightly contested four-set decision to Houston on Sunday afternoon at the Fertitta Center in Houston, Texas.

Houston, who is receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll for the second straight week, handed the Bearcats their first conference loss of the season. Serving proved to be the difference in a match that saw the first three sets decided by a combined six points. The Cougars totaled 10 aces to the Bearcats' two. 

Freshman Carly Glendinning put together another outstanding performance for the Bearcats. She set a new career high in kills with a match-high 19 kills on 50 attempts (.280). Her previous career high (17) was set on Friday in UC's win over Tulane. For the weekend, she averaged 4.50 kills per set. 

Sophomore Shaye Eggleston posted her second double-double of the season with 10 kills and 13 digs. Senior Payton Frederick recorded a season-high 20 digs while fellow senior Kerstin Ficker added 13. The Bearcats were +16 in digs (71-55). 

// HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | The opening set saw 13 ties and eight lead changes. With the frame tied at 22 apiece, the Cougars scored three of the final four points to win the set, 25-23. Glendinning put down six kills with no attacking errors on 11 attempts in the frame (.545). 

SET 2 | The Bearcats used a 6-0 scoring run to take an early advantage in the second set (9-4). Houston then scored five straight to take the lead (18-15). Cincinnati went on another run to go back in front and win the second set, 25-23. Glendinning once again tallied six kills in the set. 

SET 3 | In another tightly contested set, Houston held on to win in extra points, 26-24. The Bearcats trailed 23-21 before tying up the set after a solo block by Abby Walker. The comeback fell just short as the Cougars squeezed out the set win. Ficker and Frederick combined for 11 digs in the stanza. 

SET 4 | The Bearcats fell short in the fourth and final frame, dropping the set by a score of 25-17. The Cougars used an 8-2 scoring run to take control for the remainder of the set.

The Bearcats return to Fifth Third Arena for their AAC home opener against SMU on Friday, Sept. 30. UC will also host Memphis on Sunday, Oct. 2.
