TicketsCINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati Department of Athletics celebrated and honored the accomplishments of many at the 21st annual Legion of Excellence on Friday evening at Fifth Third Arena.
The Legion of Excellence annually recognizes the academic achievements of current UC scholar-athletes from each sport, new inductees to the James P. Kelly Athletics Hall of Fame and UCATS Order of the Black Blazer along with a winner of the Strubbe Distinguished Service Award and the first Bob Goin Service Award for contributions to Bearcats Athletics.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Title IX, the landmark federal law that prohibits gender discrimination in educational programs and activities, the 2022 James P. Kelly Athletics Hall of Fame Class is the first to feature all women and includes Jacqueline Keire (swimming and diving), Kathy Klump (track and field), Laura Lauder (volleyball) and Laurie Pirtle (longtime women's basketball coach).
UC Athletic Director John Cunningham introduced the 2022 Strubbe Distinguished Service Award winner, Chris Hock. The award honors the continuous efforts of offering time and support, allowing him to make a volunteer impact on the betterment of the Bearcats mission.
Cunningham then welcomed the three 2022 Order of the Black Blazer Honorees to the stage. Chris Carper, Gary Gruber and Kirk Perry were recognized for their extraordinary enthusiasm and support for UC.
The Bob Goin Service Award, given to a Bearcats coach, administrator or employee for distinguished service to UC Athletics, was presented to Bill Mulvihill.
The Strubbe Distinguished Service Award winner, Order of the Black Blazer honorees and the 2022 Hall of Fame inductees were honored on Saturday with an on-field recognition at the UC football game against Indiana.
In addition, a student-athlete representative from each team was inducted into the 2022 Legion of Excellence. The selection for Legion of Excellence is based on the highest cumulative grade-point average on the respective team for the previous school year and good academic standing within the individual's athletics team and college.
