CINCINNATI— The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving team will take on the University of Indianapolis in the first dual meet of the 2022-23 season on Saturday, Oct. 1, in Indianapolis.
The meet will be held at the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center, with the dive portion of the meet starting at noon ET. and the swim events will commence at 2 p.m. ET.
"Indianapolis traditionally has a pretty strong squad, so I believe we will be challenged early on," head coach Mandy Commons-DiSalle said. "The team has looked great training this fall and are starting to race pretty well in practice, so I believe they are ready to get this season started off strong."
Cincinnati squared off against Indianapolis last season. The women's team won 165.5 to 135.5, while the men's team fell just short, losing 154 to 145.
The Bearcats have six team captains for the season, seniors Katherine Connolly and Kevin Leibold and juniors Jessica Davis, Drew Hawthorne, Logan Lawhorn and Thomas Matthew.
"The captains have done a tremendous job leading the team so far this season. We spent a lot of time over the summer with the team focusing on this pivotal season for our program," Commons-DiSalle said. "The leaders have embraced their role and are working together to demonstrate what it is to be a Bearcat."
The Bearcats are returning a host of athletes that recorded top-10 times in program history a season ago. Seniors Michael Balcerak (200m free), Spencer Sehlhorst (400m IM), and junior Tommy Eaton (200m back) each broke Bearcat records in their respective events. Balcerak enters this season as the reigning American Athletic Conference Male Swimmer of the Year.
UC has also received an influx of youth, with 24 freshmen – 14 women and 10 men – on this year's roster.
"With so many new faces, we are excited to see how the team races in their first competition," Commons-DiSalle said. "We have a lot of versatile newcomers and are looking forward to seeing the results of training early on. I am looking to our captains and returning squad to help set the tone for our competitiveness this season."
