ORLANDO -- The Cincy Bearcat was crowned the national champion in the Division 1A Mascot Competition on Saturday at the 2022 College Cheerleading and Dance National Championship at ESPN's Wide World of Sports Complex.
A total of 10 mascots were selected after submitting an entry video. From their submission, the Bearcat tied with Aubie the Tiger from Auburn and entered the competition behind Smokey the Dog from Tennessee.
Bearcat took the stage at 4:15 p.m. for the finals routine on Saturday with props in tow and performed a construction themed skit. The Bearcat's six handlers assisted with prop setup and choreography led by Mascot Coach Chris Helmers and Cheer Coaches Tabby Fagan and Tim Murphy.
Following a long delay from the judges the 10 mascots were ranked and Bearcat came out on top defeating Aubie, Smokey and Goldy Gopher (Minnesota) along with other tough opponents.
In addition to the Bearcat's competition, the University of Cincinnati Dance Team finished fourth in their hip hop and Pom semifinals routines to make it to the finals round and will compete on Sunday.
