JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. -- Sam Jean and Ty Gingerich each carded 4-under 68s to tie for second after the first round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate on Sunday.

Cincinnati is tied for second with a 9-under 279, two strokes behind host East Tennessee State. It is two strokes off the team's best opener of its four tournaments this season, trailing only its 277 at the par-71 Bearcat Invitational.

"We had a really solid start today," head coach Doug Martin said. "This team showed tremendous toughness and grit today. We really weren't in a groove and everyone just stayed patient until finally things started to happen. We needed this start today, as we have struggled to get started so far this fall. I'm really happy for Sam and Ty who keep putting themselves in position to play well. They both have showed tremendous work ethic over the past year."

For Jean and Gingerich, it was their sixth 60s round out of nine this season. Four of Jean's six birdies came over a six-hole span on the back nine. William McDonald also added five to tie for 20th, and his 1-under 71 was his lowest to start an event this fall. Wyatt Plattner (72) and Rylan Wotherspoon (74) followed.
