CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati baseball team defeated Notre Dame in a 14-inning exhibition game on a sunny Saturday afternoon in South Bend.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bearcats took a quick 1-0 lead, scoring the first run of the game on a solo home run by sophomore CJ Dean. Dean added a second RBI in top of the fifth to extend Cincinnati's lead to 2-0, but the Fighting Irish evened things up to 2-2 with a two-run single in the sixth frame.
The biggest play of the game came in the seventh inning, as Cincinnati took advantage of a Notre Dame error to plate three runs and take a 5-2 lead on a swinging bunt by CJ Dean. True freshman Landyn Vidourek added an RBI single in the 11th to make it 6-2. The Fighting Irish managed to rally in the 12th and 13th, eventually bringing the score back within two runs, but the Bearcats held on to win by a final score of 6-4.
ON THE MOUND
Eight Bearcats pitchers saw action, allowing 9 total hits, striking out 11 and only allowing 5 walks over fourteen innings.
Redshirt junior LHP Alex Shea set the tone with 2.0 scoreless innings to begin the game. True freshman Griffin Hugus, grad transfer Dylan Brosky, and redshirt senior Jackson Murphy also pitched multiple innings of scoreless relief. Both Brosky and senior Mitch White did not allow a hit during their Cincinnati Fall Ball debut.
AT THE PLATE
Both CJ Dean and junior Cole Harting had multi-hit games, but seven other Bearcats reached base, including true freshman Landyn Vidourek who provided an important late-game RBI single. Dean (HR), Harting (2B), and sophomore Lauden Brooks (2B) were the only Bearcats to record extra-base hits.
UP NEXT
