DALLAS – The University of Cincinnati battled to a 2-2 draw with SMU at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium on Sunday.
With the decision, the Bearcats earn a point and move to 5-2-6, 1-1-3 AAC.
Cincinnati struck first early in the match when Lauren Bastian drove a corner kick into the box that found the head of Emma Schmelzer for her second goal of the season in the 14th minute. The assist is the third of the season for Bastian.
The Bearcats' attack advanced to the ball into the attacking third in the 32nd minute where Bastian was clipped inside the 18-yard frame to draw the foul call. Maddie Thiss converted the penalty kick attempt for her first goal as a Bearcat, slotting a strike inside the left post to double the lead.
The Mustangs cut the deficit to one off a penalty kick of their own in the 36th minute.
The Bearcats possessed the 6-4 shot advantage to head into the locker room with the 2-1 lead, their sixth match leading after the first 45 minutes.
Cincinnati maintained possession to preserve the one goal advantage throughout the second half until SMU earned their second penalty kick of the match, converting the equalizing attempt in the 87th minute.
Anna Rexford saved the other two shots she faced on the afternoon to extend her season total to 29.
Cincinnati returns to the pitch next Thursday, Oct. 20 when the Bearcats welcome Houston for a 7 p.m match.
