CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati baseball team fell to Ohio State in a 14-inning exhibition game on Sunday afternoon in Columbus.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bearcats took a quick 3-0 lead thanks to an RBI groundout from sophomore Tommy O'Connor and solo home runs from redshirt junior Cam Scheler and sophomore Lauden Brooks. The Buckeyes would go on to score 4 unanswered runs before redshirt junior Kameron Guidry responded with a solo homer of his own to even up the score at 4-4. Ohio State plated three more runs in the sixth and seventh innings to take a 7-4 lead.
In the top of the tenth, Cincinnati would hit back-to-back home runs off the bats of redshirt sophomores Kerrington Cross (2-run) and Kory Klingenbeck (solo), but the Buckeyes would answer in the bottom of the frame with two homers of their own to stretch their lead to 10-7.
The Bearcats rallied in the 13th, scoring twice on a Buckeyes throwing error to bring the score back within 2 runs, but with both coaches electing to play the bottom of the 14th, the Bearcats struggled to record the final three outs, ultimately resulting in a final score of 22-9.
AT THE PLATE
In addition to 5 home runs, the Bearcats offense also combined for 11 hits on the day, drawing 9 total walks and 4 HBP.
Kerrington Cross (2-4) and junior Josh Hegemann (2-3) were the only two Bearcats to record multi-hit games. Outside of UC's 5 homers, Hegemann's 13th inning double was the lone extra-base hit of the day. Kameron Guidry, Tommy O'Connor and Kory Klingenbeck each collected a stolen base.
