VERO BEACH, Fla. -- The Cincinnati men's golf team set two school records for both a 34-under par and 830 at the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational, where it finished fourth out of 16 teams.
The field featured six squads in the top-50 nationally, including the No. 32 Bearcats, and it marked the second-straight tournament in which UC saved its best round for last. When Cincinnati won the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, it shot a 30-under 834.
"I'm so proud of this group," head coach Doug Martin said. "We battled so hard this week. I knew going into the event we were going to have the pedal to the metal for 54 holes. We survived the first 36 and knew today was going to require a great score. Having all five guys shoot under par today just allowed us to be aggressive all day."
Ty Gingerich, who entered 59th in Golfstat's first fall rankings, earned his fourth consecutive top-10 finish by claiming the ninth spot. Sam Jean joined him with a 4-under 68 to put him in 14th, and the two finished the fall with nine rounds in the 60s out of 14 overall.
Rylan Wotherspoon matched Jean for 14th, the freshman's best finish so far and third-straight tourney he has lay claim to that accomplishment. He and William McDonald (5-under 211) each had their lowest-career event scores. McDonald's 68 on Monday matched a career-low too.
"We have shot 64-under combined the last two weeks, with a win and fourth-place finish to close the fall season," Martin said. "Everyone contributed to our success this fall. Sam and Ty were the horses we needed while Rylan, William and Wyatt all contributed every week. Now to the offseason, where we have some things we need to clean up, but I'm very excited to get after it and get better."
UC will open its spring campaign in style with the Dorado Beach Collegiate in Puerto Rico, Feb. 26-28.
